Journey Beyond Aspen: Haig Point

Leave the Mainland Behind

One of the many charms of Haig Point, located on the northern tip of Daufuskie Island, is that it is accessible only by boat. Arrive from Hilton Head Island, SC by a scenic ferry ride from the private Haig Point embarkation center or a 24-hour water-taxi service from Harbour Town. The personal touchpoints of concierge services, like grocery and package delivery from the mainland, make island living second to none.

The natural beauty of Daufuskie Island shines through each and every property in Haig Point. Pristine beaches showcase the glistening water of the Atlantic Ocean with a backdrop of South Carolina at its finest.

A Unique Island Community

A mix of gracious homes and quaint cottages are respectfully carved into 1,050 wooded acres of Daufuskie Island.

The community of Haig Point attracts a diverse range of couples and families – people from all over the world.  Community members are a fascinating group, hailing from as far as New Zealand, Germany and Denmark to Poland, India and Singapore.  The majority have lived and traveled all over the world, yet they’ve chosen Haig Point.

Accommodations and Events

The Strachan Mansion

The Strachan Mansion at Haig Point was built in 1910 on St. Simons Island as a summer retreat. In 1986, the new developers of the community moved the mansion to Haig Point with two barges over three days in some times treacherous waters. The historic building was restored to its magnificence as you see today.

Featuring four luxurious suites, each with a tie to Haig Point’s history and beautifully themed with antique furnishings, the Mansion presents comfortably elegant accommodations for guests of residents and members. Guests can unwind from their busy day with a refreshing beverage at the bar, playing billiards with friends or simply relaxing in one of the cozy gathering places.

The General Store is located in the Mansion, stocked with necessities to tide you over between trips to the mainland. In the mornings, the Mansion offers complimentary coffee, muffins and daily newspapers. The Member hub also houses an on-site post office, and it’s a Wi-Fi hot spot for those wanting a peaceful place to catch up on work while watching dolphins frolic in the surf.

The 1873 Lighthouse

In 1872, construction commenced on the Lighthouse that would guide captains navigating the shifting shoals of Calibogue Sound. The Lighthouse’s 40-foot tower served mariners traveling around the northern tip of Daufuskie between 1873 to the 1930s. After many years passed with no attention to the structure, the Lighthouse was restored in the 1980s after development began at Haig Point.

While it serves as a guesthouse with two bedrooms, kitchen, dining room and porch overlooking Calibogue Sound, the Lighthouse is also a sought-after venue for weddings, special events and private parties. Be sure to tour the historic lighthouse on your visit to Haig Point!

Here, Outdoor Adventure is Endless

Haig Point has 29 championship holes to challenge any level golfer. The equestrian center is outfitted to meet the needs of all horses, and lessons are offered to those looking to become riders. Tennis enthusiasts can enjoy six Har-Tru® tennis courts with USTA’s “Outstanding” rating.

Golf

The Signature course has appeared in Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Courses” and “Best in State,” and has earned a coveted position in Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 in the World.” First designed in 1986, the course was 20 holes long and designed to bring out the best in the game and golfer. In 2007, the greens were restored and the course’s legacy sharpened as one of the best in the nation.

Part of the fun of playing the Signature course is the fact that both the 8th and 17th holes have two holes to choose from making this a true challenge. Par is 72 on this 74.9 rated course. The Bermuda grass has a slope rating of 142 and can be challenging but is completely worth it.

The 9-hole Osprey course allows gameplay without having to commit to a full 18 holes. This beauty boasts breathtaking surroundings and views. It offers a fast, family-friendly option for those who are new to the game or would like a relaxing round. The Osprey course consists of Bermuda grass and has a rating of 74.9 with a slope rating of 142 with par being 36. This makes for a great short play so you can get in some practice while enjoying the outdoors.

Equestrian

The private Equestrian Center offers members every service from grooming and boarding to lessons and trail rides. Members and guests may enjoy horseback tours of beautiful Daufuskie Island, plus private and group lessons. Both English and Western tack and technique are available.

A 12-stall barn is complete with tack room, lounge, restroom, office and wash/groom stalls. The stables are on three, meticulously manicured acres. Boarding includes daily pasture maintenance to provide horses with adequate grazing. Four turnout pastures, as well as a riding arena and round pen, are on-site. The facility is fully staffed seven days a week to provide the rider and the horse special attention and care.

A Lifetime of Special Moments

Whether you croquet at the Strachan Mansion, fly fish, cast for shrimp or crab, take a sunset cruise or enjoy an event at the Club, Haig Point offers a rich and fulfilling lifestyle.  It’s not opulent, stuffy or fabricated, but welcoming and undeniably authentic.
